Tournament FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you have registered your team to play on September 11th and have not received a note from Suzanne McAllister to follow up, please email suzannemcallister@sympatico.ca  immediately.  In your email, please include your team name, the division in which you registered, your name and your email.  THANK YOU for your interest and your registration - we look forward to seeing you September 11th!!

What is the tournament all about?

The 3 on 3 Face Off Against CF Road Hockey Tournament is a charitable event. The Tournament was first organized in 2002 as a family's effort to combat the helplessness one feels when your daughter- grand daughter- niece - is diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.  Recognizing that they couldn't "fix" the disease themselves, the organizers committed to raising money for research and care for patients with Cystic Fibrosis.  Since then, with the help of friends, family, volunteers, the generous support of many businesses -and of course, road hockey players- the tournament has raised over $60,000.  This is a great accomplishment, but until CF stands for Cure Found, no one will be satisfied.  Please consider joining the fight against Cystic Fibrosis.

What is the format of the tournament?

Each team can register up to 7 players.  Teams can play in either the Competitive Division or the Recreational Division. On the pad at any time are 3 players plus a goalie.  The tournament is round robin, with a championship round.  Games are 20 minutes running time.  Additional rules can be found here.

When and where is the tournament?

The tournament is held primarily outside September 11th in London, Ontario.  The tournament returns to our most popular venue, the North London Optimist Community Centre at Cheapside and Highbury. The Centre recently underwent $3.9 million in renovations - we are very excited to be back there!

What if it's raining?

The tournament will run in most weather conditions except in extreme situations.  We reserve the right to postpone games in the event of unsafe playing surfaces, but the tournament is played, rain, shine or humidity!

What are the playing surfaces?

The tournament games will be played on asphalt parking lot/tennis courts and some games may be played on the indoor, ball hockey surface.  The majority of the games will be scheduled for outdoors and the championship games will all be outside -weather permitting.

How do I know what in which division I should register my team?

The Competitive Division is for you if your team plays in a regular road hockey or ball hockey league or if your team is a tournament team that travels to tournaments regularly.  The Recreation Division is for you if you just put a team together to play in this tournament, or you just play for fun and exercise.

How much does it cost to enter the tournament?

The cost is $175 if you register prior to July 31st.  If you register on or after August 1st, and there are still spots available, the fee increases to $210.  This is the first time in 8 years that the fee has been increased.  For the entry fee, you are guaranteed 3 games of road hockey, a hot dog or hamburger lunch and a tournament gift bag. Winning teams in each division also get individual prizes and their team name on the tournament trophy.

How do I register?

Follow this link to the Registration Page.  The tournament has limited spaces, so we encourage you to register early.  Registration will close a week prior to the tournament or when all of the spots are full.

Are co-ed teams allowed?  Is this an adult tournament?

Co-ed teams are welcome and encouraged.  We recommend that players be at least 16 years old.

Are slap shots allowed?

Checking, and general rough play is not allowed. For the first time, slap shots are allowed in both the Competitive and Recreation Division. A slap shot is when the stick is raised above the waist prior to contact with the ball. Please see the Rules Page for more information.  Remember, this is primarily a fun tournament and it is the goal of the organizers that everyone have a safe and enjoyable day reliving the days when a whole day could be spent playing road hockey - without the "CAR!!"

What equipment do I need?

Players are encouraged to wear gloves, elbow pads, shin pads and helmets.  Goalies are permitted to wear regular hockey equipment.  All players must come with their own equipment; we cannot guarantee that there will be any extra equipment at the tournament.

Do I need to bring anything besides my road hockey gear?

Water, pop, juice, hot dogs and hamburgers are available to purchase on site with all proceeds supporting the tournament.  There will be a silent auction table, 50/50 draws and raffles throughout the day.  Washrooms and indoor rest areas are available.  The location of the tournament is within walking distance of variety stores and restaurants.

I'd like to help out with the tournament.  Who do I contact?

We are always happy to have help!  Please contact Heather Coghill or Keith McAllister or click here for more information.  We are always looking for help in organizing the tournament and the day of the tournament.  If you know of someone who would referee a game or two, please let us know!  Also, any silent auction items or player prize donations are most welcome!
